Regional Materials Content Environmental Claim Validation (ECV)
UL Environment’s Regional Materials Content Environmental Claim Validation (ECV) validates that a product contains raw materials that are extracted, transported and manufactured within a defined regional area.
This validation demonstrates the manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability through the sourcing of local materials, signaling the conservation of energy and resources by reducing long-range transportation.
UL Environment’s Regional Materials Content ECV verifies the amount of raw materials or total product extracted, transported and manufactured within a regional area (typically within 500 miles).
Under the ECV criteria, the use of regional materials content is clearly defined, carefully reviewed and measured so that manufacturers and their customers can understand the environmental significance of their claim.
Manufacturers whose products have achieved UL Environment’s Regional Materials Content ECV are able to validate their environmental claims via a trusted third-party source. This also helps position their products to contribute to earning credits toward the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification. The UL Environment ECV badge communicates to customers and prospects that products have been evaluated by a neutral third party and independently validated to have been manufactured and/or perform in accordance with regional materials content claims.
By earning an ECV for regional materials content, manufacturers can also demonstrate their leadership in sustainability to savvy purchasers and specifiers demanding green products.
