Bio-based Content Validation

Overview

UL Environment validates the content of a product made from materials that are derived in whole or in part from biomass resources. Validation of these claims helps manufacturers clearly and credibly communicate their products’ unique environmentally preferable attributes.

Definition

Bio-based content refers to materials that are derived in whole or in part from biomass resources. UL Environment validates a product’s bio-based content through testing. Examples of bio-based content include polylactic acid (PLA), crop and wood residues, among others.

Benefits

UL Environment’s environmental claim validation (ECV) badge allows manufacturers to confidently showcase their recycled content efforts at a consumer level, a distinct advantage in an ambiguous green marketplace. Just one of the possible features of a sustainably developed product, recycled content speaks to the efficiency and integrity of the manufacturer supply chain, and a commitment to environmental stewardship.
